How to Read FDOT Standard Plans

Short answer

FDOT Standard Plans are numbered NNN-NNN — the first three digits are the series (e.g., 425 = drainage structures), the second three identify the detail within it — and each index can carry a companion SPI document stating its design criteria and plan content requirements.

Standard Plans are FDOT’s library of pre-engineered details: cite the index on your plans and the detail, its design criteria, and its construction requirements come with it — no re-engineering. They are republished by fiscal year edition; the edition matters because indexes change between editions.

The numbering system

Index numbers are NNN-NNN: the series and the detail. Series 000 is general and roadway geometry; 102 covers temporary traffic control; 425 and 430 cover drainage structures and pipe; 400/450/455 cover structures and foundations; the 500s cover traffic railings and barriers; the 600s and 700s cover signals, signing, and lighting. Knowing the series is the fastest way to navigate the library.

The SPI — the part people skip

Many indexes have a companion Standard Plans Instructions document. It states what the detail was designed for, its assumptions and limitations, and the Plan Content Requirements — what your plans must show when you cite it. Citing an index without reading its SPI is how missing callouts and misapplied details get into plan sets.

Editions and citation

Standard Plans are issued per fiscal year — FY 2026-27 is the current edition in this library — and an index’s content can change between editions. Plan sets cite indexes in general notes, detail callouts, and the standard plans index on the key sheet; the citations must match the edition the project was designed to.
