Design Assumptions and Limitations

Design Assumptions and Limitations See notes on Index 700-013 , FDM 215 , FDM 230 , FDM 261 , and the Structures Manual (SM) , Volume 3. Work with Index 700-010 . Do not use Index 700-013 for mounting permanent signs to shoulder traffic railings or concrete barriers unless there is insufficient room to accommodate the use of Indexes 700-010 or 700-012 .

Intended for use with static signs only. For permanent signs, tabulated maximum sign areas and corresponding post diameters are based on a wind speed of 110 mph installed on barriers less than 30 feet above surrounding areas. Base plates Type A and B are sized for permanent installations and designed for a wind speed of up to 110 mph when installed on existing FDOT Standard concrete traffic railings/barriers with 1" diameter anchor bolts.

Temporary sign post and plate (Base Plate Type C) designs are based on a wind speed of 80 mph with a maximum 24 square foot sign. These sign structures are designed for temporary placement on all standard FDOT barriers, including installations on temporary concrete barriers covered by Index 102-100 . Anchorage details are for Adhesive Bonded Anchors.

Undercut Anchors may be used in lieu of Adhesive Bonded Anchors when approved by the District Structures Design Engineer and the State Structures Engineer, on a project-by-project basis. If approved, project specific details will be required in the plans. When using Undercut Anchors, the designer must submit a request to the District Specifications Office to use Developmental Specifications Dev416 and Dev937 for Post-installed Anchor Systems which includes provisions for both Adhesive Bonded Anchors and Undercut Anchors.

• For Permanent Signs: See the FDM 940 . For all Temporary/Work Zone Signs: Use Index 102-600 to layout sign locations in the Plans. Index 102-600 requires signs to be post mounted. When post mounted criteria cannot be met, use Index 700-013 , show the location of the barrier mounted signs in the Plans, and include the pay item for barrier mounted work zone signs. However, to reduce the amount of barrier mounted work zone signs, increase the sign spacing as allowed by Index 102-600 . Index 700
